Default Is It Possible To Create A Tape Loop

Here's the issue. Since most modern preamps no longer come with true tape loops I'm wondering if I can create one. Stay with me here...

The MA8000 has a fixed output that the manual states can be used to record (and I have done so many times). I don't think, however, that I can actually monitor what is being put down on the tape because it is not a dedicated tape loop. I've been having some issues with the record quality on my X1000R and I would like to monitor in real time what's going on while recording to it.

I do, however, have a vintage Technics SH 8020 Freq. Equalizer that can be used in the recording chain. I remember it has a tape monitor switch. It's been years since I've used it, but it is in perfect condition and with a S/N Ratio at around 107 db, I don't have any concerns that it's just a distortion box.

Thoughts?
