Walter Bell, the most famous (should be infamous) ivory hunter, shot over 1000 elephants from the end of the Boer War thru WW1. His primary weapon was the 7x57 Mauser, which would be illegal to use today due to its small size.

About 15yr ago one of the Philadelphia Eagles offensive linemen showed up at my club while I happened to be there. He was with a member to practice for their trip to Africa. They had double-rifle chambered in the 450 Nitro Express (might have been a Rigby). With a target at 50yd none of the three could hit it. They moved up to about 25yd and each took one more shot. They did manage to hit the target somewhere and all agreed, ".....that's good enough." To say the recoil was substantial would be an understatement and they were not enjoying themselves. I don't think I would want to be the professional hunter taking them out for dangerous game and am sure I would not enjoy shooting the 450 Nitro Express. The 700 must be just that more punishing to both man & beast.
