As a side note when I was doing my research on my laryngeal pacemaker, I tested different types of materials: gold, platinum, steel . I looked at bipolar vs unipolar designs. I tested omnidirectional electrodes designs as well as other tricks to increase surface area. I played around with changing paramters such as pulse durations, frequency of current pulses, changing voltage, changing current. In the end with all these great theoretical changes, the muscle decided which worked the best. I learned with over stimulation you get fatigue and increased polarization resistance in the tissue, development of scar tissue around the implant etc. My point here is that physics of hi fidelity is wonderful but in the end the ear and psychoacoustics have the final say....
