I realize that it is near to impossible to find a mint condition album from that time period which may prevent any true A/B to be conducted.

Not a direct A/B but I have heard some of today's vinyl and it is really good. Especially when it comes from the more popular recording studios.
Come to think of it, I've heard some of pretty old vinyl that is pretty incredible as well.
