I do not think the EQ is going to help if you are recording through the MA8000 because you haven't created a loop - the EQ signal output still has to go somewhere.
That leaves a few options. You could use a source (such as a CD player) that goes directly into the tape deck's line input, with the tape out going into an input on your MA8000. Then you could use the tape deck's source/monitor switch to make the comparison.
Another option is to leave things as they are but use headphones plugged into the tape deck as your monitor.
Like you, I miss having a tape loop. Or two.
