I agree with you to a large extent - our old home in suburban Atlanta was in an area with a lot of trees which would down lines quite often for extended periods. Wires hanging from poles are ugly and less reliable than being underground.

Speaking of 'hidden tax' what are the maintenance and upkeep required of something like a 20-25kw Generac or other similar unit that is connected to my natural gas line? The amount referred to above seems like a lot for something that largely lies dormant. My home, built last year, is pre-wired for a generator.
