Mark, sorry to hear of your frustrations. I had a Rel G2, but eventually removed it. I thought it sounded good with the sub, but thought it sounded good without it as well. I removed it because I want to achieve the sound I'm looking for with just 2 speakers and wanted to simplify my system. I was also obsessed with always trying to dial it in.
I can't help you with positioning advice as my dealer set up my speakers and it sounds really good to me. Not sure if they could be positioned better, but the imagining seems dialed in where vocals are centered and deep. To my ears the bass is very full and tight, but occasionally can be either too much or not enough depending on different recordings.
Maybe take a break for a few days to relieve the frustration. I hope you get it figured out.
