I agree some amount of hiss at some volume level is "normal". But I think normal is a funny word when it comes to hifi. From our signatures it is clear that both of us (and a huge number of other people on this forum) have spent more on our stereos than other people spend on really nice cars. This is not normal behavior. We are looking for performance that is way beyond normal.

It's in this context that I wonder about hiss and how it might manifest itself in the noise floor.
