I agree with you about the (too) subtle improvement very expensive amps bring.
Do you still plan to change the W7M for something else after you're done with your source?
If you keep the ARC pre I'd look at the Ayre MX-Rs since they have a 2MOhm input impedance; from this pov it would be a great match to the ARC pre.
Also you should check the Musical Fidelity Titan (the amp Michael Fremer has), very powerful and has a 200kOhm input impedance.
