Sure...but the steel needles are pretty hard on the shellac surfaces making record wear
a problem. It's probably best to have a modern turntable with a 78 rpm speed option if you want play a particularly rare recording.
The Edison cylinder machine uses a permanent diamond stylus to play the hard plastic cylinders called "Blue Amberols". They sound particularly nice and have very little wear.
