Rebound effect from Paxlovid; this is a well-documented occurence in a subset of recipients, and symptoms tend to clear in an average of three days without additional treatment, acc. to CDC. Clinical trials found that Paxlovid lowers the risk of hospitalization and death from COVID-19 by nearly 90 percent.
The practically significant (what matters in the real world) and important point is 1) he didn't end up in a hospital and 2) he's still alive.
