W4S and DSD
Help please. I have a W4S Dac2se and I run Foobar on Windows 10. Is anyone able to point me to a walkthrough for playing music in the DSD format?

Does Foobar use USB drivers? Roon and JRiver do and the drivers are required to play DSD.

Thank you Bill.... pretty much what I was thinking.

Glad to be of assistance Andrei, I just did a quick Google search and got lucky with that AudioStream article being the first match!

W4S Dac and DSD
Right! Got it up and running. The site is a smidgen old and I had to do one thing different and that was covered in the forum comments. I have played two tracks so far but I don't have a PCM comparison.
The reason I have finally got round to this is that my redbook flac files are superior via PC and DAC as against a redbook CD played in my Oppo 105. But then SACD on the Oppo 105 trumps redbook flac. (Eyes not glazing over yet? - read on!) So the next thing to try is the DSD via the PC and DAC. I will download some samples and/or purchase some music in DSD format and make the comparison. I am sure this has all been done before and I recall some debate about the relative merits of each. As I have native DSD playback on a decent DAC I am very hopeful! Thanks again Bill & Randy. |
I highly encourage you to keep working through it and get it working. I have over 100 DSD downloaded albums. They are simply fantastic! PCM can be very good, but in my view DSD is superior...

I have never direct compared DSD to vinyl. I got rid of my vinyl a long time ago when I got out of this hobby and now that I have jumped back in every time I think of getting a turntable I start remembering what a hassle it was keeping the records clean and in good shape. I even remember going to a club members house and he put on some really nice vinyl playing through his MBL, ARC top of the line phone stage, etc. And the absolute first thing I heard was the pops and clicks... I guess I am digital spoiled now :)...
With that said DSD is, what I recall from days past, the most "vinyl sounding" of any digital format I have heard... |
