I'm with you on this. I recognize it's a great recorded album but I'm just not into this type (improv? unstructured?) jazz. Unfortunately, a lot of jazz is this way. Don't get me wrong I love other types of jazz and the artist are truly amazing at what they do but the results are lost on me. My wife on the other hand loves it. To each his own.

PS. The only time I was intrigued by this type of jazz was when my daughter performed it on stage in a jazz high school band recital. The instructor was into jazz big time and he did a great job working with the kids.

True I suppose it’s great but I just can’t hear it!
It’s got a big following which I respect.

I agree. I can't get thru it either.

That’s what makes the world go around. Love Kind of Blue but can’t get through Patricia Barber Cafe Blue. Equally loved by many.

Same here. When I first heard KoB I must have played it through 3-4 times non-stop. For me at least, the combination of Coltrane, Adderley, Davis, and Evans is pure magic. Cannonball Adderley’s solo on Flamenco Sketches is one of the most beautiful sax solos on record.

+2.

I never tire of hearing Kind Of Blue.
I remember buying my first version of it.
There was just one copy left in the store, but it was reserved, for another customer.
The shop-assistant saw my desperation - I really wanted this record! - and he left it to me...

Love it or not, it is a personal taste that cannot be judged

Ditto :)

In the TV series Suits, Harvey plays Kind of Blue late in the evening at the office, as a way to unwind, with a glass of whisky in his hand. I think that's the way to savour the experience

My favourite Miles Davis track is still quite a conventional arrangement.

KOB is the recording which started my journey down the Jazz Rabbit Hole. I am still meandering in it.

radio times 09-11-2021 03:27 AM

I didn't get Miles straight away, had to go the big band route first. KOB is among his most easy to get records, with Sketches of Spain, but I had to put the Duke etc leg work before.

Exactly. There is no accounting for taste. That said, I'm heading down to listen to my two copies of KoB (original pressing & 180gr rerissue) of which I'm a fan.

I think the discussion is about the music, not about a specific release. And did you mean UHQR? They’re pressing it in batches, the 2nd batch has been shipped with another one to come, as I understand it.

Tony - According to the Stereophile review, Chad is working on a double LP 45 RPM of the UHQR to be released in the near future as well. I haven't seen anything official yet but that's what they said at the end of the review.

KoB is one of my favorite jazz albums. It just clicks for me on every level.

I have at least 5 copies of it, plus a hi-rez version on my server. Also on order is that AP remaster that I've been waiting on for months now.

All Blues is in my book one of the greatest tracks of any genre, but I get it that the album isn't going to be everyone's cup of tea.

tank64 12-20-2021 09:28 PM

It is interesting, personal tastes. I love KOB buy have spent 20 years trying to understand Bitches Brew- every year, I try again, but it has never clicked with me.
I am just glad there is so much music out there.

radio times 12-21-2021 03:43 AM

Side one of Bitches Brew is right up there, side two not quite so much. Still good though. He birthed jazz fusion with it, more or less.

Same here. Bitches Brew just isn't my cup of tea.
I love Miles from '44 till '69, and then again in his last years (splendid covers of 'Human Nature' and 'Time After Time', amongst others).

Formerly YB-2 12-21-2021 05:24 PM

Well, Bart, you are quite consistent in your thinking. If memory serves, you are not a fan of Herbie Hancock's 'fusion' era of playing (or Miles' Bitches Brew, In a Silent Way, Big Fun, etc.). While fusion is not my favorite from Miles, I'm OK with most of it, but would rank it in the bottom tier of his work. Like you, I favor the 25yr from '44 thru '69, whether in his own groups or playing with others.

bart 12-21-2021 06:11 PM

Ha Glenn, I do remember we danced on Hancock's Rockit when it came out!
What a versatile musician!

Finally got to take this one out of the shipping carton yesterday (intercepted by my wife a while ago).

Not sure if I will open it. May keep it for "Investment Purposes." :scratch2:
