New rack for Crown Distinction series system
I'll chronicle the construction of my new system rack for my Crown Distinction series system here.
Here we have the early beginnings of the top frame assembly. I've drilled the holes for the mounting screws. Clearance for #8 with counterbores. Here we are using 2 X 8 stock. http://i732.photobucket.com/albums/w...ps0c42194b.jpg http://i732.photobucket.com/albums/w...ps60e8d401.jpg Pete |
After some preliminary sanding, here's a mockup of the top frame box:

Putting the top frame together
Time for some screws and glue...I use Elmer's professional wood glue.
I put the pieces together in two "L" sections first, then put them together as a box, watching squareness as I go. http://i732.photobucket.com/albums/w...psfab63dbc.jpg http://i732.photobucket.com/albums/w...ps91531f16.jpg http://i732.photobucket.com/albums/w...psd27a1eb6.jpg Squareness is a concern when you don't have a woodworking shop and have to rely on Home Depot to make your cuts for you. Things weren't real square at first but I was able to get thing to draw together pretty well. http://i732.photobucket.com/albums/w...ps6136dd1e.jpg When I built the last (8) pieces of audio furniture, it was before I had my Florida room built and had an outside patio to use as a work area. I hadn't really anticipated building any more furniture, but you know how this hobby goes....now part of my challenge is to build this fairly large rack in a rather confined space. It doesn't look very big yet, but when completed it will be about 55 inches tall. The next step will be to construct the side panels. Stay tuned... Pete |
Pete... This will be fun to watch!

Phase two...
Last weekend was a busy one, as I picked up more lumber and got started on the next phase of the rack construction-that being the preparation and assembly of the large (55" tall) side panels with the shelf supports.
http://i732.photobucket.com/albums/w...psf5e8b199.jpg With this type of pine lumber, there are always some defects to tend to, such as minor splitting... http://i732.photobucket.com/albums/w...pseba9d776.jpg In some cases, we find that there are some split areas worse than what was first thought....not a problem however. Glue, clamps and sandpaper can work wonders. http://i732.photobucket.com/albums/w...psf7126481.jpg http://i732.photobucket.com/albums/w...ps91c600a5.jpg Here's an early mockup...bet you can't find the repaired area! http://i732.photobucket.com/albums/w...ps12928d3c.jpg Some power planning was required on the top frame box to assure a smooth final assembly when that time comes. http://i732.photobucket.com/albums/w...psf8a77c34.jpg http://i732.photobucket.com/albums/w...ps5a070507.jpg Pete |
Now we begin preparing the shelf supports....
http://i732.photobucket.com/albums/w...ps45b14c7a.jpg http://i732.photobucket.com/albums/w...ps4462c524.jpg http://i732.photobucket.com/albums/w...psb0d8d154.jpg These pieces don't look real pretty at first, but not to worry....they will clean up and are nearly invisible once the rack is assembled. Here's a mockup of how the sides will be assembled.... http://i732.photobucket.com/albums/w...ps23deaf4b.jpg http://i732.photobucket.com/albums/w...ps14193e08.jpg The goal for this next weekend will be to have both side panels secured together; and to pick up the shelf boards and begin preparing those (mostly just sanding). If things go as planned, I would have the final assembly of the rack complete the weekend of 9/14-9/15. Stay tuned.... Pete |
Looking good Pete!
Keep up the nice (wood)work! It sure is tough with limited space, I know. |
