TAD R1-MK2 vs CR1-MK2

In consummating my opening order with TAD, I am thinking about the R1 instead of the CR-1.

Space restraints prevent me from getting both. The CR-1 really makes more sense due to space needed and weight.

Either pair would need to go up a full flight of stairs. The R1's are beastly at about 330 lbs each.

The final decision winner will be driven by my Accuphase gear.

Your thoughts are Welcome.

Well, I don't think the weight should be a huge consideration. They go up the stairs once and down the stairs once. With either the R1 or CR-1, you'll need help (just extra help with the CR-1). This is easy for me to say from the cheap-seats, because I won't have to help lift them. :-)

On the other hand, whether they fit the space should be a huge consideration. You are clearly the type of guy who is interested is optimal performance, not just bigger for the sake of being bigger. My vote is for the one that will perform best in the given space. Which one is that?

Karl... It's a tough call, the CR-1 makes more sense and is more popular due to its lower price point.

The R1's would of course be larger, and to my ears the clear winner on SQ. Maybe I should just stick with my original decision, but those darn R1's look and sound so amazing. O.o

It would be ideal if I could get them both in the room somehow.

Indeed.
But if there is only space for one pair, I'd go with the CR-1s.
They will indeed be the most popular ones. And they still offer 85-90% of the performance of the R1s.

Do they have to be in the same room? If not, then if I could help you out just say the word. :D

Here's my take between the two the CR-1 gets you 85% of the R1. The missing 15% in this case is huge for some and not for others. First it's a more efficient speaker so you can drive it with practically anything, the extra woofer is going to give you more oomph, the R1 is drop dead gorgeous and bad ass looking. Oh yea it weights extra 230lbs extra bracing, when I have these speakers cranked up to the max and I put my hand on the side of the speaker I don't feel one bit of the speaker vibrating. So if any of these traits and a thinner wallet don't mean much then the CR-1 is the way to go. From a selling point for a dealer if you have the R1 and someone says he doesn't want to spend that much money or has a small room then you tell him for half the price I can get you 85% their. My room is 15 X 38.

Go for R1 I intend to do when I decided to purchase a pair. 15% are or might be the big difference to be 100% satisfied, why take a chance?;)

My take ~ for own use R1, for re-sell CR-1.

*What are the differences of mkII versions ~ Performance? Price? Thanks.
