Cary SLP-05 mix match tube question
I was wondering if anyone would share their experience with using a different set of tubes in the balanced positions versus the left and right channel positions. (Yes, I do use balanced interconnects throughout my system) I am finding a noisy tube and was curious if I could replace two tubes versus all six together. Of course I could stay with the current brand tube, but I have a interest in looking at Sylvania, Tungsol, and the ken Rads. I'm assuming it is correct to keep the left and right channels the same, how much effect would having a different matched set of tubes on the balanced position would effect the output SQ with the Cary preamp?

I also just acquired a SLP-05 and I am very interested in good tube choices. I have heard that the Popes are the "best", but pretty much not available.... second choice?

People have had luck with rca and sylvanias as well. Some use cryod tubes.
I use popes on either 6 or 4 of the spots depending on my mood. I would also recommend upgrading then rectifier tube to a Mullard or philips metal base |
My path so far has been to change the rectifier tube to a GZ34 metal base Philips Miniwatt Holland metal base with welded plates
A pair of RCA 6F8 6F8G Substitute Vacuum Tubes With Adapters in the balanced positions (I use XLR to the amplifiers) And switching between the Sylvania S6SN7-SYL2 black base and the Psvane CV181-T-MII/2 in the output positions. I find the Sylvania's slightly more favorable to the highs with the Psvane very complimentary. |
I took Joey's suggestion and got a GZ34 metal base Philips Miniwatt along with a set of Popes. I t sounds wonderful!

Hello
thinking about using 6F8G tubes with my Cary SLP-05. Is it possible to install adapters from the top? I am afraid if holes will be enough wide to do this?. Sorry for my English.. |

Woo Audio makes tube adapters that would likely fit, but not sure that they offer a 6SN7 to 6F8G adapter. You can always ask them.

Does anyone know if all those blue lights on the SLP-05 can be dimmed or turned off? Would be helpful for night listening.
