Half Speed Master?????

Hi Guys,
I should know what this means, but I don't. I've never come across any vinyl that I thought about purchasing that was done in half speed and I might not have the capabilities to play something like this. Thanks

Jack... you can play them just fine!

Jack, check this video out. Answers most of your questions...

BTW, I have several half speed master records. Overall they do sound a bit better, but in most cases it's not earth shattering.

Thanks Ivan and Freddie. This answered all my questions and many more that I hadn't even thought of. Now I have to get some half speed master vinyl and check it out.

So if re-issued vinyl is half-speed mastered, does that always mean it was cut from the original analog source? I ask because the Police have a new box set that is half speed mastered but I can’t find anything about the source material. If it’s not cut from the original analog source, will it sound as good?

No, Half speed mastering can be performed on digital or analog sources. Nowadays, seems like Miles Showell at Abbey Road does most half speeds currently available, all of which to the best of my knowledge were mastered from digital, likely all hi-res digital. Yes, half speed mastering can sound very good from digital sources. Like all thinks audio, “it depends”.
