New MR89 Tuner

I'm not sure I like the meters instead of the analog-like tuner display on the MR87/88, but it's nice to see a new tuner anyway.

Got to hand it to Mcintosh. Still building tuners.:thumbsup:

It's nice to see that Mac remains in the tuner biz, because they've made some of the best. I'm not sure how I feel about these DSP-based tuners that are not pure analog but, to be fair, I haven't heard one of them. I do note that Mac seems to have given up on the so-called "HD" feature that was included in its MR-88 model, which is a technology that seems to have failed in the US, and good riddance to it.

Yes. Nice to see them sticking with analog FM (analog broadcast, anyway). As stated, thankfully, HD is approaching the universal death it deserves. Am a bit surprised that the MR89 does not include XM radio.

You can get much better fidelity from streaming XM than is available from the satellites. But, to your point, I guess Mac could have included an ethernet input that would have allowed that.

I am shocked that am/fm still exists and that they think there is enough demand for this. Honestly, how many people inside their house listen to local broadcasts? I am a little biased because I'm buying one but I think the wave of the future is streaming devices like the Rose that are software expandable and highly interactive and simple. I would rather see them head in that direction

Really? You're shocked?
Radio reaches more than 85 percent of US adults each week - that's more than 200 million listeners in the US alone. Of course, much of that listening is in the car. But I'd wager that for those who listen at home, most are also able to stream as well. So it's not an either/or proposition.

The fidelity from OTA FM is often better than is available on the same station's stream. Have you ever heard a live FM broadcast? It's amazing how good some of them can sound.

I won't argue with you that the future is streaming. But I'm in no rush to ditch my FM. Or tape. Or LPs. And I keep that gear properly serviced so that I always have a choice when I sit down to listen.

If Dan were here, I know he'd chime in. :(

My Accuphase and Magnum Dynalab tuners sound amazing!
