Is It Possible To Create A Tape Loop
Here's the issue. Since most modern preamps no longer come with true tape loops I'm wondering if I can create one. Stay with me here...
The MA8000 has a fixed output that the manual states can be used to record (and I have done so many times). I don't think, however, that I can actually monitor what is being put down on the tape because it is not a dedicated tape loop. I've been having some issues with the record quality on my X1000R and I would like to monitor in real time what's going on while recording to it. I do, however, have a vintage Technics SH 8020 Freq. Equalizer that can be used in the recording chain. I remember it has a tape monitor switch. It's been years since I've used it, but it is in perfect condition and with a S/N Ratio at around 107 db, I don't have any concerns that it's just a distortion box. Thoughts? |
I do not think the EQ is going to help if you are recording through the MA8000 because you haven't created a loop - the EQ signal output still has to go somewhere.
That leaves a few options. You could use a source (such as a CD player) that goes directly into the tape deck's line input, with the tape out going into an input on your MA8000. Then you could use the tape deck's source/monitor switch to make the comparison. Another option is to leave things as they are but use headphones plugged into the tape deck as your monitor. Like you, I miss having a tape loop. Or two. |
^^Thanks for the input. I had a feeling that was the case.
