Moving from mcintosh mc462 to mono blocks

i have had the mc462 for 2 months. really like the sound but getting the bug to upgrade to mono blocks. to those who have personal experience with the mac amps, would i be better skipping 611's and going straight to 1.25kw's. being the 611's not much more power than mc462, not sure how much better they would sound for the money invested, whereas the 1.25's almost 3x more power. or is this all overkill for my sonus faber amati's? thanks.

You have to get the 1.2’s because you’re going to want them a few months after getting the 611’s

Either mono-block will provide considerably more head-room due to the individual power supply in each. All depends on what you want and how much of a good thing could over-drive your SF Amati Traditions, which are rated at 500w, max. Not sure you would gain anything over the 611s with the 1.25s.

I agree with Ankkor and Ivan. If you can afford the 1.25's I would buy them, but not necessarily that they will result in a significant improvement over a 611 with your Traditions. IMO the 1.25's can be final amps that you can build any system around for the future. I have an XVX and Thor. I can tell you a Thor needs much more power than a mono 611 can deliver, but a 1.25 easily handles my Thor.

My XVX is a mammoth speaker and needs a lot of current to sing. The 1.25 makes my XVX sing. I have some great live concerts on BR. It feels and sounds like I'm on the second row. Honestly, I would not trade my 1.25's for any other amp out there, unless I could sell them, and pocket the difference. Although large and heavy, compared to some of the super amps, they are small and compact and the meters are extremely useful. Other manufacturers do feature meters but they are not even close to Mac's.

I could not recommend an amp more highly. So it's not that the 611 won't do a superb job, its's the quality of the 1.25 that I would pay the money for.

Charles,
I wonder if the 901s would complete with 1.25? What you guys think?

Another option, might also get another MC462 and bi-amp the speakers.

Go for the 1.25 kW. It’s in a different zip code altogether.
