Linn Klimax DSM/3 DAC streamer in the house...

My Editor, Robert Harley recently asked if I'd be interested in reviewing the Linn Klimax DAC/Streamer for TAS, so of course, I said, "Yes." Doh! :p

It arrived today, and it's a real beast. Feels like it weighs at least 30-35 lbs. Absolutely beautifully constructed and engineered, wowza, just cray-cray.

Just listening to it this evening as with Roon; have dig into the manual and downlowd the software. It's quite the device.

Stay tuned for first impressions as it settles over the next coupla three days.

I’m looking forward to this. I have the previous version and my dealer is haunting me to upgrade.

Happy to keep you up to date on this, Tony.

Right now, I'm just going over the "manuals" after...I finally found them on the web (which was not easy...but I'm not telling you anything you don't already know). There wasn't even any documentation in the box as to where to go to find the manuals online. :nono:

As mentioned, right now, just using it as DAC via USB with my SOtM network functioning as the Roon endpoint.

It's still settling as it literally arrived off the truck today.

It sure is built like a battleship....

It looks beautiful. How is the display?

I use the SOtM as well to turn a Chord DAC into a Roon endpoint. That has been a flawless experience to date.

Interested in what a $40K streamer serves up!

The display is really nice. It only lights up when a track comes on. It doesn't show album art, though, like the Aurender N20 does.

I hooked up the Klimax directly via Ethernet today, and bypassed the SOtM network and it still functions seamlessly with Roon.

The online Linn Owner's Manual, once I finally found it on the Net, though, leaves a lot of to be desired. It's not very helpful and there are numerous spelling, usage, and syntax errors. It looks like it was written by someone for whom English was a second language.

Here's an excerpt, copied verbatim (including spelling errors):

"Connect you PC/MAC to this socket via a USB cable and select LINN DSM as your Audio Device.
PC/MAC will typically transcode the audio into PCM format before feeding down the USB cable to the 384k"

:sigh:

That’s too bad. Their online manuals used to be decent, they must be outsourcing now.

Re the display, there used to be a Konfig option under “Display” for sleep mode. If turned off, the display should stay on. However with Roon it may only show “Roon” between track changes.

I have come around to thinking, and this is personal preference, that unless artwork can be substantial in size and high resolution, don't bother. A really crisp text-only display, well laid-out, is preferable.

Anyway, a beautiful unit. Priced in the uber-leagues though, so meant for a discerning buyer. Too bad about the manual.

I spent this afternoon carefully measuring the shape and dimensions of my main room. With lasers.

I input the room shape, dimensions, and attributes (e.g. windows and doors) into the LINN Space Optimizer web page, and the Space Optimizer computer built a model for my specific room in a few minutes.

Compared to not using it, the LINN Space Optimizer function in the LINN Klimax DSM/3 DAC/Streamer frickin' kicks *ss.

Very, very impressive.
