Shindo Allegro 604s

3 Attachment(s)
Hello, I am new to this forum and I am new to Shindo. I recently acquired a preowned Shindo Allegro 604s preamp. It really changed the way my system was singing and I enjoy it very much. Unfortunately I have not been able to find any information about this particular preamp. It is not a complex piece of equipment and I do not really need any manual, but still it would be great if anyone could point me in the right direction to where I can find some info about Allegro, technical data, years of production, goods, bads, etc. The preamp is far from new but is in very good condition. I noticed that tubes are GE and Mazda 12AX7. I am planning to replace them with Telefunken tubes. Would you recommend such upgrade? How can I find out which tubes were there initially?

On another matter: my speakers are JBL K2-S5500, 4 ohms, 95 dB, recommended amplifier power 100-300 watts. I currently use vintage Sansui BA-5000 to power up the system and it will soon be replaced with vintage McIntosh MC2300. As you can see they are all solid state amps capable of producing big watts. Would you recommend any Shindo gear that will manage my speakers?

Regards,
Evgeny

I would not chagne the tubes. They were chosen for a reason.

Hi, The Allegro you currently own looks to be original, although it's tough to say what tubes were originally included in the unit at this point, as they may have been changed by prior owners (silly to do). Although, Shindo has included GE and Mazda in his products, so it possible they are original. I would simply leave them as is if they test fine.

Also, the Allegro you own is about 25-30 years old. It is not the current limited edition model being produced now, as referred to on my website. The current model does, however, use vintage chassis. That is where the similarity starts and stops. The circuit on the current model is completely different.

The above model you refer to, with photos, is a completely bastardized preamp. It should no longer be labeled a Shindo preamp. Looks like the output transformers have been changed, there is damping material on the electrolytic camps, and other alterations. 'Stay away' would be my mantra. :tears:

Thanks guys for your input. The Allegro posted by Reyle is quite different from mine. In fact mine looks exactly like the limited edition Matt was referring to. The faceplate is exactly the same and there is a "rec out" switch which is missing on the Reyle's Allegro. It may be different from the inside as Matt mentioned. If it not the limited edition, then it is probably one of the later models of original Allegro that Shindo-san used when building his current limited edition.

Oh...one more thing...mine also has CD input which was not an option in the original model as the original only had Tuner, Aux and Phono. :scratch2:

This model seems to have changed several times during its production, and also a dual mono version has existed.

We should be sure that the tubes GE and Mazda, are the choice of origin, perhaps with the serial number Shindo is it able of responding ?

The Mazda 12AX7 are extremely famous, have become rare and expensive today.

If it's not a secret, what are the tubes used in the latest limited edition of 8 ?
