IRS Beta Crossover Design
 

Hello Folks. Since I cannot seem to locate Someone to service the Servo unit I was thinking about internal Crossovers for my Woofer Towers. I could use an External crossover between my Pre and power amp but would I like to use the cast connections between the two. Just a thought, What do you folks think?

On woofers you most always are better to go external for a crossover, on large scale woofers the coils can get HUGE, so kinda like a JL or other sub that has it's own amp, they do an external crossover, not a passive type.

Madisound can help talk to Josh about crossovers for anything else, if you PM me I can tell what I have used in the past in this type of application.

Who have you tried for service? The schematic is pretty widely available, so a competent tech has a good chance of making any needed repair. Bayer Soundworks in Germany offers upgrades to the servo/xover, although I don't have any first-hand experience with them. Millersound also offers service on these, I think. But again, I don't have any first-hand experience with them.

The IRS Beta Infinity woofer system is designed to be used with the IRS servo unit. The woofers lose a lot of performance without the servo control.

Can you tell us about the trouble you're having with the servo/xover?

Were you able to get in touch with Greg Schug? Gary posted his contact info here the other day. I know he has repaired servos before. The Beta servo has the circuits in it for the accelerometers on the woofers so you would lose that if you use another crossover. If you don't mind that, any external sub crossover will work. I think Ivan carries the Bryston unit which is quite good.

Yes I did and he does not have the equipment to Calibrate them.

So from what you describe and the age etc, to me sounds like a leaky cap or caps in the circuit. A good audio/ electrician repair tech should be able to test and find the bad part or parts.

I think I recall back in the day some folks pulled these apart and upgraded most of the caps etc with better grade parts as well. I am sure you have surfed around and I see non on eBay, the agon etc. it would be nice to stay near stock, maybe at least call Madisound maybe they know someone too if they won't offer repairs. I am sure there are folks that fix these, also what about audio classics, they not only sell used gear, they repair as well.

Good luck, it would be a major chore to build a passive crossover, it can be done, I have built many, but in subs it is most times these days cheaper to go active.
