Drove a new BMW M5 today

My son & I went car shopping today. We went to a local dealer here in the Cape. They had a new BMW M5 in "Space Gray" that I drove.

It is quite a nimble sedan, and quite spirited. I got a kick out of the lumber supports that automatically sense lateral G-force and instantly inflate/deflate to keep you in place. The front passenger also has this option on their seat.

Overall a very nice ride. I will do some more research; although I think the M3 hardtop convertible would be even more fun up here in the Summer.

Have you owned a BMW before?

I've never owned one. When I lived in Germany, the BMW's had some reliability issues. These days people who own new BMW's say that those problems have been fixed and are quite reliable. I do like the way those cars look though.

I owned a previous generation (2001) M5 for 5 years and I had a lot of fun with it. The old version was 400HP, the new one is 500HP, it must be diabolically fun. Even though I prefer the looks of the old one.

The M3 has "inherited" the 400HP from the M5 and, at considerably less weight, is a rocked and a whole lot of fun (I've driven a couple). However, at almost 6'2" I felt cramped in it.

I'd go for the M5: performance + comfort.

That's why I would consider the convertible. ;)
