NAS and importance of backup
The SSD cache on my Synology 920+ NAS has been fickle since I installed the pair of SSDs. Every few months I would get an error saying it crashed when in fact it was only a tentative electrical connection. A quick alcohol wipe, reinsertion, reformat and reinitialization fixes the reoccurring nuance. Somehow today however, during the reinitialization, I deleted the RAID 1 volume on the NAS’s 2 HDDs and lost ALL DATA including all 38,500 songs!
Needless to say I initially freaked out a little bit, but knew I practiced good data backup techniques. I’m currently restoring all the files to the NAS from backup. Just a reminder to everyone, use proper backup techniques! 3/2/1 is not just a good idea, it’s imperative! I don’t recall the specific thread, but it was definitely an AA discussion that reminded me of the importance and got me off my ass to do it properly. You never think you’re going to need a back up until you need a back. |
Sage Advice!

Bravo!! Happy you had the backups!

….oh and backup often. Last backup was 2/25/2023 so I only lost 3 CD rips.

Glad you were well-prepared with a good backup. Yes, 3-2-1 is great advice. Frequency is also important - I back up my Synology to an attached USB drive daily, to detached drive weekly, and to an offsite drive monthly.

I think I do good back-ups, but will ask, what is '3-2-1'?

The 3-2-1 backup strategy simply states that you should have 3 copies of your data (your production data and 2 backup copies) on two different media (disk and tape) with one copy off-site for disaster recovery. It’s a little old but still useful. |
Got it! Don't do the tape part :), but got the local and offsite back-ups going -

I don't do digital audio but I'm curious if any servers offer raid 1 mirroring and you backup to a raid 1 mirror? Or is that considered overkill?
