Always some good music on the street when we visit. Jazz Fest starting late April this year is excellent. My nephew is a keyboard player in NO (on tour with Ghalia Volt at the moment - back for Mardi Gras & Jazz Fest). He often plays at the Maple Leaf when he's home.
Gary Krist's "Empire of Sin" is good history of NO that covers the roots of NO jazz.
