Thanks for the update. I'm sure we can get it figured out. There's only so many places a problem like that will occur, usually in the form of a phase of the balanced circuitry not being connected somewhere. I think we should be able to track it down in short order even if it is a heat-related problem.

Hi RLF. Should a kept your Ref 6?

Ryan. Thank you for the follow up. Needless to say, I was shocked when my dealer called and told me that they could not reproduce the problem in the store. We’ll see if it starts occurring after they finish running it over night. I would like to think that it is heat related too, but when my dealer asked me to unplug it overnight and then turned it on the next morning, it still exhibited the same balance problem even when cold. I highly doubt that it is a problem elsewhere in my system since my loaner ARC preamp is all balanced too and the balance is spot on with both channels playing at the same level.

My dealer will be in touch with me today. I’ll ask him to send my KX-R to you to check out thoroughly at Ayre if you believe that you can get to the bottom of this. Much appreciated.

.........When I switched interconnects from the right to left, the balance discrepancy changed channels with the left speaker now playing louder than the right.......Perhaps I am overlooking something?

Bob - have you tried a different set of interconnects from the preamp to your power amp?

Tom. Thanks for the suggestion. I didnt try a different set of interconnects, but since everything is ok with my loaner preamp into my MX-R amps using the same interconnects, I doubt that’s the source of the problem. At the time that I first reported the problem to my dealer, he didn’t think so either, but I will ask him again. It’s interesting that Ayre products balanced inputs and outputs don’t have the clip to lock them in place. I did make sure that they were inserted into the connection all the way and snug at both ends though.

Follow up

My dealer just called me and said that the preamp has started to drift at about 1.5dB off center which he said it wasn’t doing earlier in the morning, so apparently a long warm up time is the key. As time went on, my drift got significantly worse. At this point, neither he or I believe that it was doing it when he first put in my system and that it took several days to become significant. At least it is now acting up at the dealer and will go back to Ayre for a fix.

Sounds like you are getting great service. A dealer who follows and and provided a loaner 'till the issue is resolved. Can't ask for much more.

Yes indeed, I have been a long time customer of theirs and they have always provided top notch service and support.

Good to see that your dealer can duplicate the issue. Godspeed in getting it fixed and back in your system.

Tom. Thanks for the well wishes in getting it fixed. In the meantime my dealer has lent me my old preamp back until the Ayre comes back.
