Lewis & Clark

We all thought the Winchester won the west?

Watch this. It is a cool story about Lewis & Clark's air rifle.

The Austrians helped defeat Napoleon at Waterloo (and other battles) using air-rifles. The French thought them unfair for being not only a repeater, but mostly noiseless with no smoke. How could that be fair?

But, "the west" was won considerably later when the Civil War vets started moving there in large numbers. Especially after the completion of the transcontinental railroad. The Trapdoor Springfield is likely a better choice than the Winchester, if there was a "gun that won the west."

Glenn,
The video mentioned the air rifle was made in Italy for Austria so your input that it has a longer and deeper history is not surprising. What I found most interesting was it being theorized as the reason why L&C survived so much contact with the Natives - basically it was a ruse.
