I am playing using the qobuz app from my iphone 12 to stream via shareport-sync to my BDA-3.14. Even though on my phone a song may show HI-RES /96.0 kHz, the BDA plays in 44k. Does it only play higher resolution through the MPD playback method?

Yes, shareport and shareplay are limited to 16/44.1.
