Ammo prices
What's going on with ammo prices? Speculative pricing due to high demand or the new norm? :scratch2:

Ammo prices
High demand has caused tremendous shortages of the raw materials - apparently primers being a major culprit.
I watched a video by the CEO of Federal Ammunition the other day. Equally important to what he had to say was the video of him walking through near empty warehouses. |
Good thing I’m sitting on well over 65K rounds of multiple calibers.

Should be enough. ;)

People have gone nuts (again - same as the 2008 election) with maximum hoarding, etc. Its even worse this time with all the conspiracy theories floating around. I've got enough to get thru this season but will start running short about this time next year. Its nuts and, of course, the NRA is stoking all the fear they can (don't worry, I'm a life member). Unfortunately for us end users every step in the chain is happy to gouge the next person as they rake in the $$ hand-over-fist. Compounded by the Remington bankruptcy (big supplier of ammo and the raw components we reloaders use as well as firearms) and subsequent sale of its various bits and pieces. Its crazy. As soon as anything hits the shelves of retailers, even with purchase limits of 1 or 2 boxes, its gone. As Serge mentioned, primers are up about 35% in price, or more, when you can find them. I'm on several alert-lists, but am sure so are thousands (10's of thousands?) of others. And, like last time, most of the price increase will stick.

At the Cape or in Florida? Need to know which compound we’re gathering in when the zombie apocalypse comes. |

We could organise a big AA shout-out!! (Between Accuphase and Esoteric players that is :D) |
I'm a big recreational shooter and range member. I shoot 22 mostly due to cost and keep about 2000 rounds on hand. Lately it's been almost imposable to find ammo, I just paid twice the normal price (pre biden) for CCi mini-mags and felt lucky to find it.
|
It's just like a drug. Users will pay anything to support their habit.:tears: The biggest gripe I have is that there are many out there (you know who you are) who already have more ammo than I could ever use for the rest of my life, and they keep buying more.
|
I just bought a new rifle that I won’t be able to shoot until the ammo supply frees up. Not a big deal but it is an interesting situation.

My new 6.5x55 Ruger No.1 was going to be in the same position until a friend remembered that he had a couple of boxes of NOS Sierra 140gr HPBT bullets he was kind enough to sell me at a fair price. When I say NOS, they were in the green boxers with the metal tabs on the corners. That's like 40yr NOS. Now I have to find powder. Probably $50/#. |

5.56/.223.
I have some but not enough to shoot it frequently at the range. |

I went online to find 10mm rounds today and there’s almost nothing out there
|
I can find most but won’t pay the prices they are asking.
Primers are reported to be the key constraint. Especially for you reloaders. The ammo makers will aim any primer inventory towards their own ammo sales, especially at today’s prices. |

Exactly the same position I’m taking. Price gouging ensues. I’m glad I “horded” all these years which was actually simply picking up a few rounds here and there when on sale, LEAVING PLENTY for anyone else every time. No more plinking with a few hundred rounds on a Saturday though. Dammit. |
It's hard to decide which has been a better investment for me right now...crypto or ammo...lol.

I'm down to 1000 rounds for my AR so no more range time for me until ammo is available at a reasonable price again.

I am well stocked with the small number of calibers I need which are .22LR, .45ACP, 5.56 NATO, & 7.62X51.
I reduced the number of calibers I need some years ago and rely on those four exclusively. |

I might have to re-check my inventory on .45ACP because this thing will go through it pretty fast.

That’s a lot of lead down range Michael!

Craig - your comment made me wonder how much lead I put down range each season (non-pandemic). Based on my 'back of the envelope' calculation I put 450-500# of lead down-range in a typical year. At this weekend's match I'll toss about 5# of lead towards the targets (200, 300, 385 & 500 meters). Here's a picture of 80 of the 400gr bullets I cast this week. I'm behind in same and need to cast another 750 to be caught up for the season. 250# of lead "weighting" :D its run in the bullet molds. https://www.audioaficionado.org/atta...1&d=1620753791 |
My wife and I have continued to shoot handguns, PCC's, and AR's weekly through Covid. We enjoy our time together at the range and do not want our skills and muscle memory to slip. We continously work from both owb and iwb holsters and multiple guns and multiple targets. We go through around 1500 rounds per month with around 1000 of that being 9mm. We are fortunate to belong to a private range that has been open the whole time with a roughly 50yx50y short range bay all to ourselves. I also shoot long range precision once a week, but go through much less ammunition for those calibers.

Not just ammo the price of everything is going up. Jerome Powell has the printing press turning out new money 24/7. Here we come 1970s.
