willson sophia ii vs iii , 89 vs 87 db ?
Hi, I read many different things about the two models.
I had sophia 2 with pass labs int30A he handled them very well. Is the new model 3 more efficient? I read that the woofer is softer but the medium harder :scratch2: |
I owned the Sophia II for many years. It’s a very good loudspeaker. I think if you are looking to upgrade and you like the Sophia II you should consider other models in the Wilson lineup instead of an updated Sophia.

Wilson always launches significant upgrades when the change models, so yes, there will be a definite improvement.

Sophia 2 Sensitivity: 89 dB
Sophia 3 Sensitivity: 87 dB |

I don’t know - I also sold my Sophia 2 and I have not heard the Sophia 3 so can’t say. The 2 dB sensitively reduction I wouldn’t think would be a big problem. I didn’t push my Sophia 2’s that hard - rarely got over 30 watts and they were really loud.

Sophia 2
Sensitivity: 89 dB Nominal Impedance: 4 ohms (3 ohms minimum) Minimum Amplifier Power: 12 WATTS per channel Sophia 3 Sensitivity: 87 dB Nominal Impedance: 4 ohms / 3.1 ohms minimum Minimum Amplifier Power: 25 WATTS per channel Pass Labs Int30A 30 watts into 8 ohms 60 watts into 4 ohms Which means: 57 watts produces 97dB with Sophia 2 @ 3M/10Feet 57 watts produces 95dB with Sophia 3 @ 3M/10Feet If you listened to music between 75-85dB it would only need 1-9 watts! hi, I asked the factory and they replied:
" The sensitivity’s are the same between the Sophia Series 2 and Series 3. The Series 2 was measured at a voltage of 2.83 volts - the Series 3 was measured at a voltage of 2.0 volts. When you bring in the 4 ohm impedance, the 2.83 volts adds 3 dB. Hence, they are the same." did someone hear them ? |
google the reviews for same and read about. Art Dudley reviewed both (if memory serves, he did all three models over the years) for Stereophile. He felt the III was an improvement over the II for him.

I owned both the Sophia 2 and 3 for a bit of time. Drove them both with various tube and solid state amps. I did not notice any significant difference in efficiency where one would clearly be an easier speaker to drive. They both were quite happy with either tubes or solid state at normal/responsible listening levels.
