McIntosh D100 and D150

Hi everyone,

Is someone able to tell me which years were produced these 2 DACs?

I guess they are no longer made? When did the productions stop?

Thank you in advance.

Jean-Marc.

Jean-Marc,

A quick Google search indicated that the D100 and D150 launched during CES 2013 & 2015 respectively (North America’s premiere Consumer Electronics Show held annually in Las Vegas). Production for the D150 stopped during the first half of 2020.

So are you looking to upgrade just DAC’s or something with a larger scope……

Thank you!

I'm hesitating on what to do since my beloved MDA1000 is out of service.

I had an offer on the D100 and the guy said it is 3 years old, but I don't believe him , except if it was a NOS, don't you think so?

So I look for D100, 150 or C1100 eventually, and why not other brands.

You have on the market many many options, from 150 dollars to 10000 +dollars; from excellent Chinese DACs (Topping, SMSL, etc) to superlative "audio/idiophile" DACs.

The actual ESS SABRE 9038PRO seems to be the reference in the delta/sigma chips; others say the best are R2R DACs....

moreover it seems that it's the same quick devaluation than with computers, so very risky...

Well I'm a little bit confused.

Lately I've had a very good offer on the MATRIX AUDIO X-SABRE PRO.

I would need advices, my friends.

Yeah its definitely a space with seemingly infinite options. How much are you looking to spend? I have a C52 preamp which I really liked the DAC and felt was close to my MCD1100. Ordered the C53 but the beauty of that piece of equipment is the DAC (DA2) is now upgradeable over time. It’s a different route than a standalone DAC……

According to the McIntosh Compendium, the D100 was produced from 2012 to 2018.

The D150 production years were 2015 through 2021.

Thank you very much for your help.

I had a D150 for two years. I used it with a MTC450 for the MTC cable connection to be able to use the DSD On the SACD player. Fir that function it worked well. I think that may have been the only difference between the D100 and D150.

You are correct many, many choices not to mention methods like delta-sigma, R2R, and tube. Are you looking for DAC only or other functionality such as volume control?

After a long time wait I snagged a Baltic 3 from a fellow AA member. You know who you are. Thanks. Anyway I'm currently in the honeymoon state as it sound mighty impressive. I'm coming from the DA2 in the C2700. Both sounded great but even my wife notice a difference with the Baltic 3. The great thing is I can do some tube rolling down the line if I want to try something different.
