When I did my last theater I looked into commercial sound isolating doors. The price of entry was about $4000.

So I decided to use a heavy solid wood door and added gasketing around the jams.

Kind of the same thing here, but I actually did two doors (one opens into the room and the other opens away from the room), with about 8 inches between them. Works very well.

I opted to use a solid core wood door from Home Depot. I went for specifications and look as well. I forgot the door brand, but it was pricey and came with a custom reinforcing sound mitigating frame. All in, almost 2.5k. I already have a double wall with heavily acoustic treated things such as Quietrock sheet rock and Roxul safe and sound with two inch spacing between walls.

The door opens into the game room, so ultimate soundproofing was not necessary, and the results with the solid core door are more than reasonable for my use. Remember, depending on your room layout and code, your air gap between the floor and door, or lack of, may mandate an air vent above door to allow fresh air transfer between the rooms. If you are building a fully dedicated studio and sound abatement is necessary then your build options will be different. But, for general sound mitigation for a movie theater or listening room, I find what I did works perfectly. Good luck.

I used a 2 1/2” solid mahogany door in an exterior door frame. Worked great. Just had to be careful not to let any fingers get caught when closing. ;)

I use an insulated industrial steel fire door overlaid with 1/4" thick paneling on the room side. I also use magnetic weatherstrips and door sweeps around all the edges. I've never had a complaint unless the door isn't completely shut.

I recall reading somewhere that solid core doors (not solid wood doors) were supposed to be better for sound mitigation. Can’t remember where I saw that, though. Somewhere online.

Maybe, but I can tell you a solid mahogany door works very well. Along with an exterior frame with tight fitting sill, they are very effective. No doubt there is better but this worked.
