Want to fly an RC Model ? Better register with FAA!

Once again, what the government wants, it gets. Despite the FAA Modernization Act of 2012 which clearly stated and you can read below: Now all the modelers need to register with FAA their UAS or "Unmanned Aircraft System" or face penalties of up to $25,000. That's right, the same model aircraft that have been flown for almost 100 years safely are now a threat and must be registered after the proliferation of the quadcopter/drone toys! Anything over 250 grams and you must register with the FAA and get an FAA number just like full scale aircraft which must be carried with you and all your models must have them displayed. :sigh:

FAA Modernization ACT of 2012
SEC. 336. SPECIAL RULE FOR MODEL AIRCRAFT.
(a) IN GENERAL.—Notwithstanding any other provision of law
relating to the incorporation of unmanned aircraft systems into
Federal Aviation Administration plans and policies, including this
subtitle, the Administrator of the Federal Aviation Administration
may not promulgate any rule or regulation regarding a model
aircraft, or an aircraft being developed as a model aircraft, if—
(1) the aircraft is flown strictly for hobby or recreational
use;
(2) the aircraft is operated in accordance with a community based
set of safety guidelines and within the programming
of a nationwide community-based organization;
(3) the aircraft is limited to not more than 55 pounds
unless otherwise certified through a design, construction,
inspection, flight test, and operational safety program administered
by a community-based organization;
(4) the aircraft is operated in a manner that does not
interfere with and gives way to any manned aircraft; and
(5) when flown within 5 miles of an airport, the operator
of the aircraft provides the airport operator and the airport
air traffic control tower (when an air traffic facility is located
at the airport) with prior notice of the operation (model aircraft
operators flying from a permanent location within 5 miles of
an airport should establish a mutually-agreed upon operating
procedure with the airport operator and the airport air traffic
control tower (when an air traffic facility is located at the
airport)).

Yep, if you fly one of these and don't register with the FAA, you are a criminal now. :no:

So will this prevent the pilot from the next community from flying his unmanned aircraft (Drone) in my backyard, and hovering at my second story window?

Probably not. Laws do not make up for the lack of brains, they are created to punish the idiots easier but like everything else, law abiding citizens are always paying the price for those idiots with their freedom.

Yeah, your right on this one. I was talking with a co-worker late last year about this drone issue in my neighborhood. He's really big into flying model planes. His worry was exactly that, idiots would ruin it for everyone. Shortly after that we had a brush fire near by, and they had to ground the water dropping helicopters until they could get the drones flying over the brush fire out of the airspace.

For me its a question of common sense!

Yes, the drone pilots, no, make that drone idiots (who are either too stupid, ignorant or truly don't care about safety or privacy of others) have caused quite a stir in the model community. They are a nuisance and can be quite a pain the a$$ for the law enforcement and FAA. There are those that enjoy drones/multicopters responsibly but the proliferation of the drones being sold all across the world and in places like electronic and automotive stores? That's just asking for trouble. Anyone can buy one and fly it more or less without training! They are very easy to fly and with the GPS feature, can be programmed to fly way out of sight and return "home" safely. The First Person View that is used with drones (goggles that the user wears to see what the drone sees), also makes it possible for them to be used in all kinds of illegal ways.

Then there are even more real threats to the full scale aviation, airliners, helicopters, etc... The freaking laser pointers that blind the pilots!!! Why aren't they being pulled off the market or being "registered"!

Yeah it amazes me each time they do a story on laser pointers being pointed at aircraft on the news. I just shake my head. :no:
