Which Wire ?

Am going to run a new, dedicated 20A line from my breaker box to my system (~40ft) and am wondering if the standard Romex 12/2 w/braided ground is 'good enough' or if the 12/3 all solid conductor Wirenco would be preferred?

If anyone can point me to a good discussion or article covering the feed wire for audio, would be appreciated.

12/3 usually indicates 3 current-carrying wires plus a ground. So, black, red, white plus ground. Is braided ground allowed by code?

Romex is just a brand name of NM wire, which is probably fine for this install. 12/2 should also be fine if you're installing a single circuit, though you might want to consider 10/2.

I'm not familiar with braided ground on AC wire. All my dedicated lines use solid core conductors.

My typo. Is 12/2.

Giving some thought to 10/2 to cover any possible future needs (big amps). Will be going with a Square-D (was lucky that my house came with a Square-D panel) single-pole QO 20A breaker and Cardas duplex outlet from Ivan.

I use 10/2 but 12/2 solid core meets code.

The incremental cost between a 50 ft roll of 12/2 and 10/2 is only $10, so going larger is really a non-issue, dollar-wise.

Absolutely!

Something I was not aware of 6 years ago when I did the electrical in my listening room is the availability of audio grade electrical wire. I know Inakustik from Germany has some and possibly Audience if I recall. This is not something you can easily compare with standard electrical wire but it does exist if you have some interest.

Don't make the mistake of thinking that a lower guage wire sounds better.

Some thoughts:
80% of electrical work is mechanical work. Routing cables, installing boxes, etc.

10 gauge is significantly stiffer than 12 gauge. Something to keep in mind. Depends on the details of your particular project.
