What World Music Are You Listening To?
I have been searching in the Music forum if any thread was started on the World Music genre but didn't find one, so please excuse me if it's been covered before!
Being a fairly wide category spanning from indigenous, ethnic, folk to crossover with classical, jazz and other genres... some albums may have already been posted in the many excellent music threads on this forum, no intention to hijack but just to see if there could be an interest to share some good music from around the World under this new thread... What do you think? Here are some classic albums and some more recent releases that I enjoy... Elis Regina & Antonio Carlos Jobim - Elis & Tom Brazil, released in 1974 https://media1.jpc.de/image/w600/fro...2282441829.jpg Cesaria Evora - Miss Perfumado Cape Verde, released in 1992 https://img.discogs.com/SA0NW3pyVyp6...-9783.jpeg.jpg Ernest Ranglin - Below The Bassline Reggae/Jazz, released in 1996 https://img.discogs.com/PKmPLboChm6h...-8146.jpeg.jpg Hughes de Courson, Milen Natchev, Bulgarian Symphony Orchestra - Mozart in Egypt Classical/Arabic, released in 1997 https://m.media-amazon.com/images/I/...ZL._SS500_.jpg Bebo Valdés & Diego El Cigala - Lágrimas Negras Cuban/Flamenco, released in 2004 https://img.discogs.com/pmrrCB9OYx36...92906.jpeg.jpg John Williams, Yo-Yo Ma, Itzhak Perlman - Memoirs Of A Geisha Soundtrack/Japanese melodies, released in 2005 https://img.discogs.com/x0OIpQtfQXTv...66200.jpeg.jpg Anandi Bhattacharya - Joys Abound India, released in 2018 https://prodimage.images-bn.com/pima..._s1200x630.jpg |
Excellent idea Joel. My world music knowledge is limited so I may not be able to contribute much, but will be happy to learn more from the more experienced.

I just picked this up on Discogs after reading Herb Reichert discussing it in a recent equipment review in Stereophile. It’s very enjoyable, wonderful rhythms and playing.
Kalpana Improvisations - Instrumental and Dance Music of India Mrinal Sen Gupta, Latif Ahmed Khan, Tirath Ajmani Nonesuch (1968), vinyl https://clzmusic.r.sizr.io/discogs/l...sInstrumen.jpg |
Wow, this will be a fun thread!
Ivan, could you please make it a sticky? I adore world music, we even have a different drawer reserved for it. Indian music, South American, African, there are a lot of gems around. I'll start with an album I discovered in the general music thread: https://static.qobuz.com/images/cove...437248_600.jpg It is not purely African, as Volker Goetze is rather white. :D But the general feeling surely is, the tunes are touching, and the sound is very good. |
I second the request!

I couldn't find this album on Qobuz nor Tidal but a search on Discogs showed me a link to YouTube where one can listen to the whole album... excellent recommendation, it must sound nice on vinyl! |

I really enjoy the West African kora string instrument. I didn't know of Ablaye Cissoko's very enjoyable 3 collaborations with Volker Goetze but I have on my Qobuz favorites his 2 albums with Constantinople, the excellent Montreal based ensemble https://img.discogs.com/3TMCNZXfKti1...-1036.jpeg.jpg https://img.discogs.com/3ou9xF2vHQh8...-8482.jpeg.jpg |
Dan Storper, the founder of the Putumayo World Music record label, did a lot to promote international music.
I have quite a number of their joyful and well recorded CD compilations, here's a good start: https://img.discogs.com/LhhStFgXGLFp...-6353.jpeg.jpg |
