Proper setup, JL in a 2-Channel system

What is the best way to add a JL f113 to a 2-channel system. Bedroom system, so not a large room (20 x 30). C2200 pre-amp, MC1201's to B&W 802D's.

Cross-over to limit the 802's?

Do not want to step on the clarity in the mid-bass and lower frequencies...

Is it possible to add a sub and not give up a little resolution in the bass?

You will not be able to "limit" the 802D's without an external active crossover. That's ok, you want to supplement the bass of the 802D's. I would start at 20Hz on the sub crossover and work up from there a little bit at a time.

Try to position the sub in the corner so it can load up the room properly. Run the ARO to optimize it to your room. After that, you want to get the phase right, so have someone slowly adjust it while you are listening from your normal positioning. You'll need a test CD to do this right. When the bass gets full, you know you are in phase with your speakers for your listening position. After that an SPL meter would be helpful to get the blending smooth and integrated with your speakers. You would try to adjust the gain and ELF to get the bass smooth and proportional with the speakers.

Serge,

As always, interesting post.

Do you still use the JL's with you SF's?

Thanks.

I am wanting to explore the world of monitors and a small (113) sub.

I am a huge Sub fan, always have been. The JL's are just incredible, I will incorporate them in every system I own & recommend them for any others I build.

BTW, for Theater systems; they are a must!

Sorry Serge,

I see from other posts that the JL's are still in place.

Are you kidding, he's addicted to them. :hypnotize:

Of course I still have them. I can't imagine having a system without them now. I try not to use them when I am evaluating unfamiliar gear but they go back on line as soon as I go back to regular listening.

I find them to be what I call the "4th Dimension"

Yeah yeah yeah. I am curious to hear a Gotham, since I've melted JL voice coils in the mobile audio field from the W0 to the W6 line (the W6 is what the Gotham's use, too).

From what you say, Ivan, the version 2 used in the Gotham's must be the real deal.
