The Porsche That Had an Inflated Chassis

Never knew that the 917 had Nitrogen in its tube chassis or just how much design effort went into the space frame... :scratch2:

Fascinating. :smoking:

My new 911 GTS has it’s tires filled with Nitrogen. ;)

Special valve covers w/ a green circle on them.

Nitrogen is great, you just can't adjust tire pressure with regular air at home or it defeats the purpose. Not that you need to adjust the tire pressure with Nitrogen much. :D

The reported advantages are:

- Industrial N2 is much drier that compressed air.

- N2 doesn’t change its pressure as much as Air (roughly 80/20 N2/O2).

That is valuable to race teams that test and test and for a given set of track conditions know where they want their tire pressures to a Fine tuned level.

For the rest of us, N2 tires are useless and would be a PIA to keep at a target pressure through the seasons without having to schedule a visit to your dealer.

Consumer Report set out to answer that question.

Personally, I am ok with filling my own tires and therefore prefer regular air that I can be in control of and fill up and deflate as the seasons change.

Fully agree Serge.

The claims of extended tire life etc. all center on the fact the tire should better stay at the optimum pressure with dry N2... Hocum.

I buy tires at Costco and they fill with Nitrogen. I’ve noticed no difference. I just add air if needed. I’ve found pressure retention is more tire brand related than anything else.

Personally, I like helium for a softer ride. :lmao:
