RS1b Passive High Pass Filter
 

I've been trying out different makes of capacitors on the (now outboard) high pass filters to the mid/high monoblock power amplifier inputs.
First I changed out the Wondercaps for RTX Multicaps which gave a big improvement. Now I've just tried V-Cap CuTF which sounded very hard and diffused. What gives? Theres a huge difference in quality and cost there...
Has anyone else experimented with other makes in this HPF or do you have any particular recommendations?

Nothing ventured nothing gained. I'm now going to change from RTX to Mundorf Silver Gold capacitors in the passive HP circuit. It'll require 4 x 0.01uF paralleled in each channel i.e. eight caps.
If these are as good as they say then I'm in for a treat, if not I'll just cry into my beer.

It is most interesting to hear of your experiences with rotating caps. Keep us posted on your progress and thoughts.

I use to use the M-K high pass filters with very good effect. They are a 12db high pass filter at 80HZ. If you want to try it I believe I know where one is. It is 80hz high pass only. I don't know if this helps but good luck!

Many thanks for the suggestion, its something I'd like to try after having experimented with various makes of series capacitors. By directly connecting the capacitors in circuit both eliminates the switching and the RCA plug socket junctions in the bass servo unit.
Just by removing the capacitors from the unit to an external wired connection has already gained improved transparency.
I'm presently awaiting an order for eight Mundorf capacitors. I'll post the results here when installed.

Today I soldered in eight Mundorf 0.01uF silver gold oil capacitors for the passive high pass filter, four paralleled per channel.
I was not expecting good results until the capacitors had burnt in for at least 20 hours, The first hour was revelatory, from the off the mid range was far better, bass more defined & extended. After three hours listening it further opened up, individual choir members easily located as well as an improving stage width & depth.
Can't wait to hear what happens during the remaining break-in time. These caps are definitely keepers, leagues better than the original ones.
For 250 uk pounds this is a huge upgrade.
My RS1b is operated with two stereo interconnects, one suited to the bass (copper teflon) and another (silver) for mid/hi amplifiers. The speakers are also modified for biwire operation.

I'm confused, AudioGremlin. The RS1B system is designed for bi-amplification using the Infinity xover/servo. How would you biwire such a system?

Mid/hi towers have their EMIMs and EMITs groups separated. EMITS have an additional pair of terminals. the EMINS & EMIT groups have their own cables, the EMIM group is via the existing binding posts. Cogan-Hall cables types chosen for Mid & Hi.

I should add the Rs1b is biamplified conventionally, Manley NC250 mono's for mid/hi & Classe 300w mono's for bass.
